Effective literacy instruction for English language learners (ELLs) requires more than knowledge of reading pedagogy designed for English speaking students. It requires knowledge of second language acquisition and the differences ELLs bring to the process of learning to read. It requires an integration of effective reading practices with principles of linguistics and ESL instruction.
This professional development session connects research-based reading instruction and second language acquisition theory and practice. Through an interactive format, teachers learn the differences between teaching reading to native English speakers and ELLs. Using a practical, hands on approach, teachers then explore reading instruction strategies, focusing on areas of need particular to ELLs.
The workshop demonstrates how ESL-adapted instructional strategies enhance effective reading programs for both native English speakers and ELLs. Instructional strategies are developed around three basic principles to enhance English language development for all students: increase comprehensibility, increase interaction, and increase thinking and study skills. The strategies are also built around five areas of effective reading instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension. The activities used to illustrate best practices are classroom tested and research based.

This session is designed to make parents feel more comfortable reading to their children at home and provide additional activities and learning strategies for those parents who already read regularly to their children. Parent participants will practice basic skills about reading to children and add new activities to their repertoire. It also respectfully addresses situations such as for parents who don’t speak English and parents who don’t know how to read, providing meaningful suggestions for how those parents can interact with their children and books. Video clips clearly demonstrate each technique and provide practical tips for making reading at home a pleasurable family activity.
